The Floor

The floor starts to come together - it is 24 x 26 feet long.
After last weekend of bringing in all the wood, Darrell has managed to build us a floor.  Today he went out with Jeff and Opie to take in the 2x4's and plywood to build the walls.  Check out the pictures of the floor so far.  Check out the beautiful view of St. Patrick's Island in the background.

More Old Jackfish Town Pictures

A couple of folks have mentioned they liked the old Jackfish pictures the best.  So I promised to add a couple more - here goes.  Enjoy

The Re-build Begins

On June 4th, 2011 we began the process of bringing in the lumber, nails and tools to begin rebuilding the cabin.  The plan is to build a 24x26 cabin, starting with the floor.  Jeff, Opie and Wes all helped to get in hundreds of pounds worth of wood to the site to allow Darrell to start building.

The Fire

In April 2010 we lost the cabin to a 16 hectare forest fire.  We were devastated but quickly recovered and started to dream of the time we would rebuild.  We were lucky that the picnic table and fire pit along with its bench remained.  We figured we now had a perfect camping site.  The only thing missing was washroom facilities.  So we packed up our camping gear and all that we needed to build a new outhouse and spent the weekends of July 2010 out on the rock at Jackfish.  The outhouse was complete (including shiny pink roofing paint) and the pee/poo separator installed (swanky!).

This is the view 2 days after the fire burned through the old Jackfish village, taking with it our cabin and the one beside it.  That day many of the old remnants of the village were lost, the old fishing shacks and our beloved Dahl House.

The new outhouse in its lipstick coloured glory.  We used the only thing which survived the fire, which was the galvanized steel used for the roof.

Finding Jackfish

It was summer 2009 when we found kayaking selves wind bound on the beach at Jackfish Bay on Lake Superior.  As we walked around the old Jackfish Village, abandoned since the 1950's, we found many treasures including building foundations, beach glass and the odd black fly.  Later on our hike we took a moment to sit on the deck of a cabin and have a look out over the lake to St. Patrick's island.  Low and behold the cabin was for sale - and a couple of months later it was ours.

Samantha and the Sioux Lookout kayaking gals - Carol, Annette, Monique and Judy.  On our wind bound day that brought us and the cabin together.
